Aluminum Shelving FAQs

Items left lying around on the floor, whether at home or in the workplace, pose a serious trip-and-fall hazard. Keeping things stored on shelving in an orderly manner removes that hazard—plus, it looks better!

There are many types of shelving on the market, including fixed bracket, hanging, and floating wall shelves, built-in shelves, and open-and-closed shelves, among others. Framing Tech offers two types of aluminum shelves: free-standing, which can be secured to the floor with brackets, and wall-mounted units, which attach to a wall or frame.

Though not quite as strong as steel, in strength aluminum shelving compares favorably to steel, pound for pound. And because aluminum is resistant to rust and corrosion, it can maintain its structural integrity better. Aluminum can also withstand extreme temperatures without warping or becoming brittle.

Besides making assembly of the shelves very simple, yet just as sturdy as steel shelves assembled with nuts and bolts, T-slot connectors allow for complex fabrications with shelves of different heights and staggered separators.

Our aluminum shelf frames can take transparent glass, lightweight Sintra board, 12-gauge steel wire mesh, extra-strength Valuebond, shatterproof polycarb, and stainless steel.

Our shelf frames are made with anodized aluminum, which holds up well against harsh conditions. Optionally, a powdercoat treatment can give the aluminum further protection and an attractive appearance. To clean handprints, smudges, and dirt on the aluminum shelving, prepare a mixture of white vinegar and water, dip a clean cloth in the solution, and give the shelf a good scrubbing. To keep the aluminum looking nice, you can use a sealant or a wax to protect the shine of the metal.

Avoid applying solutions made with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or other alkali-based cleaners on aluminum, as this can cause discoloration on the metal.
